Harnessing the healing power of movement

As a parent, it can be worrying when your child struggles to sit still, concentrate, or cope with everyday tasks. Sometimes these challenges are linked to early movement patterns in the brain and body, called primitive reflexes, that haven’t fully developed or integrated. Reflex integration therapy is a gentle, movement-based approach that helps to rewire these connections, supporting your child’s ability to focus, regulate emotions, and feel more at ease in their own body.

Many families explore options such as private ASD or autism assessments, craniosacral therapy, or other interventions when they notice their child is anxious, restless, or struggling to concentrate. Reflex integration therapy offers another gentle and effective approach. By supporting the integration of primitive reflexes, it can help children feel calmer, improve coordination, and unlock their potential for learning and everyday life.

Potential Through Movement

Movement is fundamental to a child's development and well-being. Our Reflex Integration therapy harnesses the power of rhythmic and targeted movements to help children and young people overcome physical, emotional, and behavioural challenges.

What is Reflex Integration?

Reflex integration therapy is a therapeutic approach that helps to integrate primitive reflexes, the automatic movements infants make during early development. If these reflexes remain active rather than fully integrated, children may experience difficulties with motor skills, focus, learning, and emotional regulation.

Through gentle, rhythmic movements and exercises, primitive reflex integration works to rewire the brain and body, strengthening neural connections that support balance, coordination, and cognitive function. This process can make everyday life feel easier for your child and open the door to calmer, more confident growth.

For younger children, early development approaches such as Baby Massage can complement this work, while parents ready to take the next step can connect with us to find out how reflex integration can support their child. Every small step brings your child closer to feeling at home in their own body.

  • Every child is unique, and the challenges they face may look different from one another. Some common issues that reflex integration therapy can support include:

    • Coordination problems

    • Language and speech delays

    • Reading and writing difficulties (dyslexia, dyspraxia)

    • Clumsiness

    • Sensory sensitivities

    • Anxiety

    • Noise sensitivity

    • Poor bladder control

    • Fidgeting and concentration issues

    • Low muscle tone and muscle weakness

    • Chronic body aches and fatigue

These difficulties are often linked to primitive reflexes integration not being fully completed during early development. For example, when the ATNR reflex is not integrated, children may struggle with coordination, handwriting, or even classroom learning tasks. In some cases, these ongoing challenges can contribute to school avoidance or refusal, as everyday activities feel overwhelming.

Early help can make a big difference. Alongside reflex integration, some families also explore Sensory Support or Parenting Support to strengthen their child’s progress and confidence.

  • Transform Challenges into Integration

Movements mimic innate activities to retrain the system and reset postural control foundations. This integration is crucial because:

    1. They form the basis of our nervous system and movement abilities.

    2. They originate in the brain stem, responsible for survival instincts.

    3. Unintegrated reflexes can trigger stress responses unnecessarily.

    4. They can lead to coordination challenges, affecting reading, writing, and concentration.

    5. They may contribute to low muscle tone, chronic body aches, and fatigue.

Integrating primitive reflexes is a gentle, holistic intervention. As part of the process, we provide parents with simple primitive reflex integration exercises to practise at home each week. These only take around five minutes a day and not only support your child’s progress but also give you a special moment to connect together.

  • As children grow, integrated primitive reflexes allow them to move smoothly into more mature patterns of movement, learning, and self-regulation. This natural process supports focus, coordination, and the development of higher-level skills.

When these reflexes do not fully integrate, they become retained. Retained reflexes can hinder development and are often linked to a range of challenges, including:

    • ASD/ADHD

    • Autism

    • Learning difficulties

    • Sensory processing disorders

    • Speech and language difficulties

    • Hyperactivity

    • Social and emotional challenges

Targeted approaches, including work on specific reflexes such as the Babkin reflex integration, can help reduce the impact of retained reflexes. This gives children the chance to feel more in control of their bodies and emotions. retained reflexes, giving children the chance to feel more in control of their bodies and emotions.

Additional support like Play Therapy or Art Therapy can work alongside reflex integration to provide a fuller circle of holistic care.
