BEYOND THE SENSES
CALLING ALL CHILDREN’S PROFESSIONALS
A practical, experiential one-day training designed to help you understand what may be happening underneath a child’s sensory needs and what you can do to support them.
More and more children are presenting with sensory differences that can affect regulation, behaviour, attention, learning and everyday life. Beyond the Senses takes you deeper than simply identifying sensory behaviours, helping you understand the developing sensory brain and explore why some children experience the world differently.
Through a combination of theory, practical activities and hands-on learning, you’ll leave with tools you can begin using straight away with the children you support.
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
Understand the sensory brain and how sensory processing influences regulation, behaviour, attention and development
Recognise sensory needs and begin to understand what a child may be communicating through their behaviour
Explore beyond sensory processing and understand the potential role of retained primitive reflexes in a child’s development
Identify the types of sensory input that may help an individual child feel more regulated and ready to engage
Create an individual sensory diet based on a child’s specific needs, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach
Use simple, natural and accessible resources to provide sensory support at home, school or within your setting
No expensive equipment. No overwhelming theory. Just practical knowledge, a deeper understanding of the child, and tools you can put into practice.
Take the learning back to your setting
Your training includes a downloadable Beyond the Senses resource book, packed with additional information, practical tools, sensory activities, further reading and research to help you continue using the approach after the training day.
A certificate of attendance is provided on completion.
This training is suitable for professionals working with children and young people and is also relevant for parents and caregivers who would like a deeper understanding of their child’s sensory needs.
Created by professional Play Therapist Eileen Russell and Neuro Developmental Therapist Tara Cupples. With over 30 years experience between them working with children across Northern Ireland. Eileen and Tara love to bring their experience of sensory with simplicity and in a way that is easy to understand and accessible for everyone without lots of expensive equipment.
One professional participant stated:
“Genuinely one of the most interesting and useful training sessions I have ever attended. Both Tara and Eileen delivered the session so well, tailored conversation and information around the needs of our team and provided so much insight around the field of play and early learning. I can't wait to have conversations with families we work with around learning and play 'beyond the senses' and help shape the way we deliver play too!”.
