Express, Explore, Heal
Whether you are a parent or a teenager yourself, it can be worrying to cope with emotions, anxiety, or the challenges of growing up. Art therapy provides a safe, supportive space where young people can explore their inner world, express feelings they might not be able to put into words, and begin to heal in their own way.
For parents searching for support, whether it’s “help for a teenager with anxiety” or “teen support Northern Ireland,” therapy through art can be a gentle and effective way to help your child feel understood and supported. Many families discover that working with a skilled art therapist opens up new ways for their teen to cope, build resilience, and communicate emotions safely.
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy where creating art becomes a safe and supportive medium of communication. Guided by a professional art therapist, young people use artistic expression to explore, interpret, and understand their feelings, thoughts, and emotions.
This process provides an alternative way to communicate, especially for those who find it difficult to put their experiences into words. Therapy through art can help teenagers build coping strategies, process challenges, and develop emotional resilience in a way that feels natural and non-judgmental.
-
A Safe Space for Expression
Teenagers often face unique pressures from school stress to social challenges and may feel overwhelmed or unsure how to express their emotions. Art therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental space where young people can explore their feelings and experiences freely. This creative process helps them make sense of complex emotions, fostering resilience, confidence, and emotional strength.
Tools for Coping and Growth
Through guided artistic activities, teenagers learn practical coping mechanisms and strategies to manage stress and anxiety. Art therapy supports the development of emotional regulation, self-esteem, and overall mental wellbeing. For parents seeking support for teenage mental health or guidance on how to help a teenager with mental health issues, this approach can offer effective tools in a safe and engaging way.
For additional support, families may also benefit from Parenting Support or Sensory Support, which can complement the gains made through art therapy.

Art therapists are trained professionals who combine knowledge of psychology and therapeutic techniques with creative practice. Typically, an art therapist will hold a Master’s degree in Art Therapy or equivalent professional training, equipping them to support children and teenagers with emotional, social, and behavioural challenges through safe, guided creative expression.
At WayMaker, our lead art therapist, Mel, brings this expertise and experience to every session. She provides a supportive space where young people can explore their emotions, build coping strategies, and develop confidence.

Meet Mel
I'm an Art Psychotherapist with a background in social work and I have almost ten years of experience working with children and young people living in residential care. I fully believe in the healing power of art-making, through which clients are able to explore their inner world and express their thoughts, feelings and emotions. My heart is to provide a therapeutic space where young people can feel safe, nurtured and held; a space where there is no pressure to talk and where they are free to explore, play and experiment with the materials in whichever way they choose.
